Today, in the Midwest it is only 68 degrees but we all know the hot, humid weather is on its way. Several other parts of the country are already experiencing the long, hot days of summer.

As the weather gets warmer, we spend more and more time outdoors with our furry companions, but exposing your pets to too much heat can be dangerous. If you leave your pet outdoors for long periods of time, make sure he/she has shade and plenty of fresh water. If overexposed to the heat, even the healthiest pets can endure dehydration, sunburn or heat stroke (which can be fatal if not treated right away).

If you have a flat-nosed pet, such as a Pug, Boxer, Pekengese, Boston Terrier or French Bulldog, just to name a few, you will need to take extra precautions. The face/nose construction of these breeds is not ideal for the cooling and respiratory jobs a regular snout generally accomplishes.

Flat nosed pets, elderly, overweight and those with heart and lung diseases should be kept indoors and in air conditioning as much as possible.

When humans overheat, we sweat, which isn’t the case with animals. When we sweat and the sweat dries it takes excess sweat with it cooling our bodies. Pets, on the other hand, perspire around their paws which isn’t enough to cool their whole body. To rid themselves of extra heat they pant. Although this is an efficient way of controlling heat, it is limited when there is high humidity or the animal is in close quarters.

If a heatstroke is suspected with your pet, call a veterinarian immediately. Apply towels soaked in cool water to the hairless areas of your pet’s body to help cool them down.

Here are some tips to help avoid an emergency situation with your pet.

Hot Weather Tips

Shade – Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, keep them inside when extremely hot.

Water – Dehydration can occur in pets very quickly so make sure they have plenty of clean, fresh water.

Warning Signs – Symptoms of overheating in pets include:

Excessive panting

Difficulty breathing

Increased heart rate

Drooling

Weakness

Seizers

Bloody diarrhea

Vomit

Body temperatures over 104 degrees F

Animals with flat faces and short noses, such as Pugs and Persian cats, cannot pant as effectively as other breeds and are more susceptible to heat stroke. If your pet is one of these breeds, keep them out of the heat as much as possible.

No Parked Cars – Never leave your pets alone in a parked vehicle, even for a short period of time. Leaving your pet in a parked car for a short time, even with the windows open, can run the risk of heat stroke. Cars become a heat furnace in hot temperatures and should not be a place for your pet. When running errands in the summer, it is best to leave Fido in your air-conditioned home. Also, it is illegal in several states to leave your pet in a parked car.

Summer Cut – It is a good idea to give your dog (or long-haired cat) a lightweight summer haircut to help lower their body temperatures. It is ok to shave your dog down to 1” leaving enough hair to protect them from the sun. Dogs with light colored skin or fur are prone to sunburn. Make sure to use proper sunscreen, labeled for use on pets, to protect from the sun. Cats should be brushed more often to prevent excess shedding, hairballs and excessive heat.

Walking Your Pet – When taking Fifi on a walk in the heat remember to bring water for both you and her. If she is thirsty provide her with clean fresh water you brought along on your walk instead of sipping from a puddle in the street. Puddles may contain lethal antifreeze or other toxic chemicals.

Don’t let her linger on the hot concrete or asphalt. She is much closer to the ground than you are and can cause her to heat up quickly. Walking on hot asphalt can burn your pups sensitive paw pads. Avoid long walks during the peak heat hours of the day. Try to walk in the mornings or evenings before the asphalt has heated up and the sun is at its hottest.

Also, when walking your dog stay clear of areas suspected to have been sprayed with chemicals such as insecticides. Insecticides can be harmful to your pet if digested.

It is always fun to spend time with your beloved pets outdoors when the weather warms up. Just remember, the heat can be dangerous to pets so make sure to follow precautions to help keep them healthy. Stay safe and enjoy the warm weather ahead!

It is very important to make sure your dog is wearing the correct size collar. Getting the proper fit for a dog collar depends on your dog's size. For your dog to be comfortable and safe, the collar must fit properly.

Here's a general guideline for measuring for a new dog collar:

Measure your pet’s neck and add one inch for small dogs and two inches for large dogs. You should be able to insert two fingers between your dog’s neck and the collar.

Check your dog's collar periodically to ensure it is sized properly.

Some materials can stretch causing the collar to be too loose on your dog. Place two of your fingers between the dog's neck and the collar; there should be no more than the width of those two fingers between the neck and collar. If it fits looser than this, the collar could slip over the dog's ears and off their head. Check your dog's neck occasionally to see if your dog has any redness or hair loss under the dog's collar.

A big, strong, dog can easily break a collar or leash that is light weight, so they need a heavy collar and leash to ensure safety. Collars made from nylon webbing are much stronger than other materials used for dog collars. If you have a large dog that pulls, make sure that the collar material will not stretch and cause an opportunity for your dog to escape his/her collar. Small dogs, on the other hand, don't necessarily need to carry around a heavy collar or leash. It is acceptable to use polypropylene or fabric for many smaller dogs. However, you still need to watch for stretching. Adjustable collars easily allow you to tighten or loosen the collar as necessary.

It is important to your dog's safety that they wear the proper sized collar and that the collar is checked periodically for wear and tear.

Most dog collar manufactures use similar measurements, but it is best that you know the size of your dog's neck when shopping for a new collar to ensure you purchase the correct size.

Below is Sassy Classy Collar's sizing chart for adjustable collars:

Collar Sizes:

Size	Width Fits Neck Sizes (length)
XX-Small	3/8" wide	7"– 11"
X- Small	1/2"wide	9"– 13"
Small 5/8"ide 10"– 15"
Medium	3/4"wide 12"– 19"
Large 1"wide 15"– 24"
